I’m not a mechanic, but was more than able to tackle this project. Adding this kit to my ’09 DR-Z400SM took a bit of time and care, but was well worth the effort. Having this on my bike for backup in the event of electrical ignition trouble is invaluable to me.

This works on the DRZ 400S USA model minus a few parts that are used for the decompression release, which you don’t really need anyway. You will need a impact gun or a clutch wheel holder in order to remove the nut. And be careful not to strip the screws on the gear plate holder already on the bike. Works every time and parts are well made. The instructions are good, however they are hard to see, I used this webpage for better instructions and photos along with the ones included.[…]

The instructions are unclear and the pictures are very bad in black and white. I did get my hands on some other instructions from drzparts.com. Even though I had two instructions I managed to destroy the kick start stopper on the inside and that rendered the whole kit useless. You need to be very precise when installing this. My mistake was not having the return spring in the right position when closing up the bike and that totalled the kick start stopper when cranking (took a chunk out of the body inside). I was able to remove the broken parts and reassemble the whole thing. It works, but with no kick start.

This is great insurance for those long rides in the middle of nowhere. This is the same OEM kickstarter installed by Suzuki on the E-models.Installation is easy, though the instructions are lacking. Be sure to pay attention to the return spring installation and correct pre-load.Very glad I have it on my DRZ.

As has been mentioned, the instructions are terrible. It’s hard to believe the factory came up with them. There are some critical steps they just don’t mention. But, if you use them in conjunction with other directions found online (critical for success), you can get through it. On to the kit itself. I’m not sure if this is a factory kit, or something that was put together by the seller. I found one critical part missing – the oil seal for the kickstarter shaft. When I discovered this, I called the seller, and spoke to a person in parts and explained my problem. He consulted with the parts manager, and they told me that they substituted a crush washer for the oil seal. Don’t worry. We sell a lot of these kits. Install it, and it will work. Unfortunately, this substitution is not mentioned in the (inadequate) instructions, so you’re left to guess. Unfortunately, the crush washer does not fit in the shaft hole in the engine cover, and the kickstarter lever sits a little out from the engine case, so there’s nothing to crush the crush washer anyway. You can use the crush washer on the nut that holds the kickstarter lever on, but that doesn’t help with holding oil in. So, until this is addressed, also order Suzuki part 09283-20044 (the oil seal) and then you’ll have a complete kit.

Great kit, comes with everything you need to do the install, including the oil seal for the actual kick starter lever. The included instructions seemed to be a copy of a copy or made with MS paint spray paint because the picture were pretty much blobs of black. Please look online for better ones as there are details that the written text doesn’t cover well.

Kit appears to be high quality but the oil seal was left out of the kit but should be included (it’s in the picture) so uninstall was halted until I can track down the oil seal I need to put the side cover back on

Seems high quality and it came with everything needed. Including the gasket people claim is missing so maybe the seller started Including it.
