  • It’s important to note that safely riding an ATV requires a certain amount of body weight and physical strength
  • Disaster can strike, for example, when a young rider uses an overpowered or a larger ATV

NICHE PISTON

An ATV piston is a component of engines, pumps, and gas compressors. It is located in a cylinder and is made gas-tight by piston rings. In an engine, its purpose is to transfer force from expanding gas in the cylinder to the crankshaft through a piston rod and or connecting rod

Piston Anatomy

A piston is a cylindrical engine component that slides back and forth in the cylinder bore by forces produced during the combustion process. The piston acts as a movable end of the combustion chamber. The stationary end of the combustion chamber is the cylinder head.

Piston Components

ATV Piston components include the piston head, piston pin bore, piston pin, skirt, ring grooves, ring lands, and piston rings. The piston head is the top surface of the piston which is subjected to tremendous forces and heat during normal engine operation

NICHE GASKET

A gasket is a mechanical seal which fills the space between two or more mating surfaces, generally to prevent leakage from or into the joined objects while under compression.

Some Types of Gaskets:

  • Head gaskets create a seal between the engine block and cylinder head. This seal establishes a proper compression and prevents fluid leaks into the cylinders
  • Base gaskets create a seal between the top-end of your engine and the engine cases. Stop pesky engine oil leaks before they cause permanent damage to your engine.
  • The valve cover is sealed to the upper section of the engine cylinder head by a valve cover gasket. As it passes around the camshafts, rockers, and valves, the gasket stops engine oil from seeping out.

First of all, I installed the top end kit, broke it in, and it works. That is the bottom line here.PROS: – Again, it works- Cost is generally less than others- Customer service from Niche was outstanding. The gaskets were damaged due to poor packing. I reported a problem via the Amazon website and Niche responded within an hour (probably within 10 minutes to be more accurate). They asked for pictures of the damage, I sent several immediately, then received an email within a couple of hours telling me that “… replacements would be sent out shortly.”.CONS: – The quality of all of the parts is around a 5 or 6 out of 10. I have seen much cheaper made cylinders and pistons, and I have seen much better made products as well. Many people online state that the cylinder ports need to be chamfered. Yes, the finish is a little rough in some places (though the cylinder and piston were perfectly smooth where they need to be). I did not modify the cylinder at all and it works without issue (several days after the install and break in, and after some pretty rough riding over very tough terrain in freezing temperatures).- The replacement gaskets took about 10 days to arrive. I feel that replacement parts should be overnighted if the damage is due to negligence of the seller, such as damage due to poor packing.- I had to ask twice to get a tracking number for the replacement gaskets.- No information on Niche’s website as to whether the gaskets should be oiled. I know that this is a hotly debated subject among many engine builders, but I have always oiled the base and head gaskets is they are made from fiber. I did put a light coat of oil on these and have had no issues. But again, I found nothing from Niche about this.Overall I am happy with the purchase, so far. I have to get used to the different sound of the engine, and I am constantly thinking that it sounds like something is right, but that is natural for me after a rebuild. I pay very close attention to the torques, sounds, discolorations, leaks!!!, etc. So far this kit seems to be working well.

Everything was as described. The only thing I can say is I wish the parts were better packed for shipping. It would have saved me time and the seller money. The rings were broken when I got them but the seller quickly replaced them. I haven’t installed the parts yet but I’ll give 4 stars based on the value and customer support.Update 10-01-2021: I finally got the motor back together. Everything measured within spec. I had to plug the oil injection port, since mine was the type which was direct to the carburetor. It would have been nice if the rings had something to indicate which was the top on them, but maybe it didn’t matter?? For what i’ts worth, they fit best with the writing etched into them on the top. Anyway, it started without hesitation and has good compression. Much cheaper than OEM. I hope it lasts long. So far i am very pleased.

Only thing negative would be the shipping packaging was horrible and no instructions were included. It’s not a slap on and let’s ride part so a knowledge of installing atv cylinders and piston is needed. Or get the service manual and follow it step by step. Read some reviews of it coming off but I found it better to torque the studs with the 1st step of the 3 step torque requirement. Leaving the last 2 steps for bolting head on. Just my opinion and I am not a certified tech just a great reader and instructions follower. It’s been on over a month and no problems. Wherever it’s made to me has no validity of it’s quality just it’s performance speaks for itself and it’s worked for me and still going.

All the parts fit and it got my 250 trail boss running again.Make sure you check the casting inside the bottom of the cylinder. There were a couple small flaws in the aluminum that need to be removed prior to installation. Otherwise seems to be a good and inexpensive rebuild kit. Time will tell.

Had it running for 10 minutes one time and a small chip off the piston destroyed itself and my head and scored the piston. 1/100 wouldn’t recommend to someone I hate

Worked great for my 95 polaris 250. Only issue was shipping. Stuff ended up loose in the box. Luckily nothing was lost. Otherwise worked great.

Bought the piston kit with the cylinder and after the third warm up cycle which was just idling 15 min each time,I decided to back it out of the garage and pull back up the driveway twice and the second time up the driveway which is only 20 feet long I heard something nasty start coming from the engine so I shut if off next day pulled it apart to find the piston blew up.

Overall the casting looks good, the bore looks great. Look everything over before Installing these kits. The cylinder boxes was completely broken open up on arrival, the cylinder itself is not damaged. The boxes containing the piston and rings also completely opened up in transit, the rings are damaged and absolutely unusable. I’ve had mixed results with this brand of parts, but not a bad price for what you get overall. Number one thing, inspect everything carefully before using, and return if you find any defects, reorder another kit. I would rate this higher if this hasn’t happened to me several times, it’s the major hassle of returning, reordering, and waiting. I would not say don’t buy this brand, but be prepared to send it back several times until they get it right.
