I took a leap of faith buying this based on its mixed reviews, and I’m extremely glad I did – this thing’s awesome. It’s a bummer that some people have had bad experiences with it, and I’m surprised they did; this is a sturdy, well-made little safe, FAR better than the plastic magnetized compartments you stick under your car, both in quality and general security (most people know to at least check underneath the car for a key safe, and once you see it – the key is yours).Most people’s trouble with it seemed to be in the fit, and I did notice that the HitchSafe came with foam seals (the seal sits between the safe’s lip and your hitch) of different thicknesses – perhaps they weren’t included before, and that was the problem.I haven’t had any trouble at all – it’s tough, fits well in my standard hitch, and the cover is a great touch, both protecting the lock from the elements and making the safe invisible to anyone walking by. I have sixty bucks, a credit card, and a spare key stored in it, and there’s still a little room for something small – a key fob pill bottle or something similar. After seeing some reviews that said the safe wasn’t waterproof, I’ve stuck everything in a little plastic baggie, but after rain, snow, and slush I still haven’t noticed moisture in the compartment.I’ve had it mounted for a few months and taken it far from home, and it’s been a great relief to know it’s there. I know myself – eventually I *will* lock the keys in the car, and instead of rolling around on a muddy road or in gritty urban slush to get at a cracked-plastic box that may or may not have made it through the last several thousand miles of interstate and off-roading, all I’ll have to do is whack myself upside the head and crouch down for a sec to open this little sucker. Huzzah!

Cute idea. Works as advertised. A bit hard to kneel/bend down and unlock. One of the “key lock boxes” for half the price, attached to a trailer hitch ring, might be easier to use since it would rotate horizontally to be able to set the tumblers without having to kneel down, but it would be more conspicuous. The HitchSafe dust cover does a nice job of hiding it without advertising to passers-by that there is a key there. Obviously the biggest elephant in the room is that you cant use it if you have a trailer or bike rack attached to the hitch, but this has not been a problem yet for me since I only use it while at the beach to keep my car-key-fob dry. It holds a Subaru fob which some of the key lock boxes will not do. Note that the metal box shields the fob RFI from communicating with the car, so your car will stay locked even though your key is beside it.The metal side latches on the inner pull out section of the key holding box seem a little undersized, but not sure one could get a crowbar into the thin gaps around it anyway. Note that the tumblers are NOT pick-proof as a visit to YouTube will show, but probably a lot safer than leaving your key unattended on the beach.Comes with different sizes of hitch gaskets. The thinnest was a little too thin for my 2020 Outback. Adding the second thinnest was slightly too thick, but I finally managed to squeeze it into place.

Impressive product. It looks very premium (and it IS!) it fit perfect and it was SO easy to set the combination (I never even looked at the instructions…. I AM a man after all….) I can highly recommend this gem. Now I never have to worry about locking myself out of the car or the house. 11 stars!!!!!
