Logger John –
Not sure if this was previously used, it was certainly all scratched up on arrival. I assembled it and tried it out. While it makes a decent step into the back of your pickup or to the roof rack of of your SUV, it’s not a great recovery tool for pulling yourself or someone else out of trouble. The bottom line is in the numbers. The seller states the product is good for a working load limit (WLL) of 1:4, 13,220 pounds of the minimum (?) breaking strength of 52,900 pounds. Yet other statements show 45,000 pounds. The user needs to know the appropriate number using the strap hook below the receiver or using the aluminum D-shackle which elsewhere is rated at less than 10,000 pounds. Ultimately, I would use this as a step and leave the recovery to known items. In step mode, it’s got two holes for running the provided locking pin. One of these is likely going to provide enough room to stand on it and be able to have a modest amount of distance between the vehicle and your body. The step measures, nominally, 12″ by 4″, and I was unable to find a weight limit for the step itself.
