used all of these at one time had a sbc crank from the factory with a piston/rod in backwards got a crank kit the compression was great on all the cylinders so i left the top together had to rig a lift to lower crank into place with all rods in place and maneuver it past the opening thats where these protectors worked very well

This will work for me, a little slick surface to be ideal, because the piston/rods have soaked in oil and when inserting into the bore, your hands can become quite oily. But that is my problem, the boots are fine.

Anyone who has used this type of bolt boot knows that they are not all created equal. These were of Great wall thickness and were wide enough so that when turned as they should be, they protect the crank and hold the bearing half in its seated position until the rod finds its seat on the journal. Then they can be removed and the rod cap installed. I guess some will say that they only needed two boots, and could install them on the next rod. But it’s nice to set all your pistons on your bench, install all the bearings, assembly lube on them, and all the boots in place while being in plain site to avoid mistakes. Very good insurance as the alternative is a time consuming fix.
