Aspen Aerogels Spaceloft is a proven, effective insulator in Oil and Gas, Building and Construction, Aerospace, Automotive, Cold Chain and other industries requiring maximum thermal protection within tight space and weight constraints. Despite the fact that we are now living in the 21st century, aerogel insulation seems like a material out of science-fiction. It is the lightest solid known, although by volume it is 99% air. It is breathable, but it doesn’t absorb water. It is incredibly strong for its weight. But most importantly, it is a fantastic insulator. Aerogel insulation is also exciting because it provides good benefit with a thin profile. For instance, shipping-containers, which have a narrow width to begin with, can be insulated without giving up too much valuable space to attaching insulation to the walls. WORKING WITH SPACELOFT: Synthetic amorphous silica is oleophilic, so it readily absorbs the oils from your skin. This characteristic is why synthetic amorphous silica is used in cosmetics as an anti-sheen agent. For worker comfort when working with Spaceloft aerogel blanket insulation, we recommend safety eyewear, work gloves, long sleeves, and long-legged work clothes. Respiratory protection is recommended if dust exposures exceed occupational exposure limits. Aerogel dust is easily washed from the skin and clothing using soap and water. Please Note: This product is very dusty. Aerogel blankets may generate dust when handled. Workplace exposures to all dusts should be controlled with standard industrial hygiene practices. Local exhaust should be the primary dust control method. Dry vacuuming is the preferred method for cleaning up dust. Because aerogel dust is hydrophobic, water is not an effective dust control agent. Unpack material in the work area. This will help to minimize the area where dust exposure may occur. Avoid dust contact with eyes, skin and clothing and avoid breathing dust. Wash hands with soap and water after handling.

Because the material can disintegrate very easily, I tried using spray waterproofing sealant. It enabled a pattern to be marked and cut with only the cuts releasing the aerogel so edges are sprayed after cutting. I think next time an art spray fixative for colorpencil pencil drawing because the spray is more controllable than what I used

i used this product to insulate some water lines in an exterior wall. i will update this review in a year, when winter comes to see if they freeze. this product is extremely dusty and difficult to work with. it’s hard to get clean cuts with insulation knife or utility knife but you will get some good cuts. the dust is very fine and it will shed dust all the time you’re working with it. even with a mask it was getting through. it also gets in your eyes so you should have some goggles if you’re going to use this extensively. unlike many dusty products, it’s actually not irritating. you will feel it in your nose and throat and eyes but it doesn’t make them irritated so it might not be toxic. it’s also waterproof, so if you wash it with water it just beads off. you will probably have dust all on your skin and notice it but if you use soap it does wash off.

Never go the chance to use this as dust just exploded from the plasitic packaging as I opened this. The dust is waterproof and it’s concerning to watch it settle on your shirt tools, etc, and then watch it roll around when moved. It get’s on things and stays on things. It can be washed off but, you have to use soap and be thorough and meticulous. My concern at that point was simply to safely get rid of it. In doing some research after the fact, I’ve learned that products on the lower end of the price range will have these issues as the materials used in the insulation mat binding are inferior. So the job now is to find samples of a better quality material.
