About this item

  • Solenoids are electromagnetic switches. The winch solenoid is used to activate the winch motor on a vehicle-mounted winch. It is designed to supply the required current without damaging the winch motor or the winch switch.
  • It is activated when current from the battery is directed to the solenoid by pressing the switch of activation. The activation of the winch solenoid sends current to the motor. Then the winch motor begins to run the winch drum. The typical winch uses separate winch solenoids for reverse and forward. Best quality winches use four winch solenoids.
  • This solenoid relay could be applicable for Winch Motors, Snow Plow & Spreader Motors, Windlasses, Hydraulic Pump Motors & Other Reversible Motors, etc. Heavy Duty Waterproof Solenoid For 12V up to 17,000lb.Voltage:12V, Power: 500 AMP, Dimension:3.9×2.3×3.1 inch/ approx. 77 x 36.3 x 86.2mm (L*W*H).

Solenoid Troubleshooting

You can test a winch solenoid by doing bypass test to determine if the problem lies in the switch or solenoid. Use a lead of 12 gauge wire and jump from the battery +12V and contact the green wire on the solenoid. The winch should operate in one direction. Then apply the +12V wire to the black wire on the solenoid. If the winch does not work in the other direction then the solenoid has a problem.

The direction of the winch movement, whether in or out, depends on which of the two two solenoid contacts is connected to the 12V power source with your lead wire. If the winch moves in only one direction, inspect the connections on that solenoid and ensure they are clear of corrosion and make good contact.

To test the motor, apply the +12V power wire to each of the two terminals on the motor. The motor should operate in both directions. If it does operate in both directions then you know the motor is ok and the problem probably lies in the switch or solenoid.

This relay fit my 10000 lbs X20 BY SMITTYBUILT winch. I fix in 20 minutes. Do not use the diagram in the box, take a picture of the old one and use that setting

Great all-in-one unit. I wanted to replace the dual solenoids and the massive box they’re housed in that came with the X-Bull winch. This is small enough to mount inside my bumper next to the winch and still have room for fog lights in front of it (1st Gen Tacoma). The wiring for the X-Bull is different than the diagram that comes with the unit. Some quick poking around with a multimeter and comparing the results to the stock solenoids quickly revealed the proper setup. I have it wired to both an in-cab switch, wireless receiver, and to the wired control. So far, so good. I got this one because it came with boots. They’re extremely tight but they’re on.

To wire a Ramsey with a 3 wire motor with terminals A, F1 and F2Battery Positive to the red dot.Motor cable A to the Black dotF1 and F2 go to the green and blue dotnot sure which F1 or F2 go to wich of the green and blue dots but if wired wrong the winch would just run backwards where you could either swap them or swap the black and green solenoid wires. This is very important the blue wire on the solenoid instead of going up to the black dot it needs to go to NEG – ground (other wise you will have a voltage drop to your solenoids.Gave it 4 stars because the instructions did not tell how to wire for a 3 cable motor.

Follow wiring diagram and should work well. Much better than an old direct switch I had that wire out. I mounted this under hood of atv. Winch worked fine using this instead of old clunky direct switch. I bought a separate switch to use with this.

This is a common style but I was replacing an older style so not an exact swap. No instructions in box. What he’d a video’s and figured it out. Works great. No issues with relay.

This worked great as a replacement for the contactor that came with my Lewmar V700 windlass and at a fraction of the price. I will definitely purchase again if needed.

It welded itself at the contractor full open, under no load. Make sure you buy quality, and have a cable quick disconnect. Dangerous.
