[Update December 2014: I’ve had this on my car for quite a while and I’ve done at least 5 oil changes since installing it. It has worked flawlessly, and I’ve never had so much as a drop of oil on the garage floor. I no longer dread oil changes. This thing has paid for itself and then some. Highly recommended. My original review follows.]I installed this on my 2012 Subaru Forester (non-turbo, 2.5 liter engine). I suppose it helps that the Forester is one of the easiest cars to change oil for, with both the drain plug and the filter in handy locations compared to many other vehicles. Still, though, the Fumoto valve was simple to install, and over the course of the next couple days after installing it I checked occasionally to make sure there were no drips. Everything was fine. Even adding in the one-time cost of the Fumoto valve I saved money doing my own oil change. I actually look forward to changing the oil in a few months. I’ll see how well the valve operates at that time, and unless I come back and edit this review you can assume it worked well.

I installed this on my new 2014 Subaru Forester and it is great. It does not protrude below the lower body shield and works just as described. With a short length of tubing attached it makes draining the engine oil back into last time’s 5 qt oil container for recycling a breeze–it fact, when it’s breezy, no oil drops are blown on to the driveway as they were prior to using this when I had a drain pan under the car. No crush washer replacement is required, and cleanup is way simpler. I highly recommend this small addition to make regular maintenance handled quickly and cleanly. Oh and my new Subaru has the oil filter on top of the engine–easily accessible while standing with the hood open. Why didn’t design engineers think of this long ago?! If you change your own oil–CHECK THIS OUT. The combination of the filter placement and the addition of this drain valve make regular oil changes easy. And changing the oil regularly ranks right behind no drinking and no txting while driving as the best strategies to make sure you and your car last a long time.

I have a Subaru Crosstrek and thanks to this valve and a set of ramps I can now drive up the ramps, slip one end of a hose over the nipple and the other into an empty oil jug and turn the valve. It’s quick, easy, and clean. There is no worry about getting hot oil on your hands, the ground, or the container you are draining the old oil into. I drop the old oil off at a local towing company that uses it for heating, but I am sure there are plenty of other places to recycle used oil. I have been changing my own oil for 20 years and am kicking myself for not finding these sooner. Also, qwikvalve(dot)com offers a three foot section of 3/8″ OD vinyl tubing for $3. I got a four foot piece from Lowe’s for $2.20 after tax. It is long enough to run to a container that isn’t under the car for less $$. That combined with the placement of the oil filter on the Subaru 2.0 at the top of the engine makes this the easiest oil change I’ve ever experienced.

Game changer for me and self serving my car. I installed this clip over a year ago on my 2013 Subaru Crosstrek. Perfect fit and doesn’t stick too far down for me to worry about it hitting on something (I do not off road this car). What makes this thing sweet is I use a 3/8″ clear hose to pop on the nipple and drain the oil out from under my car into a pan with out spilling a drop or burning my hand from hot oil. Even in NE Ohio with tall the road salt they drop, this valve is still in great shape and doesn’t leak a drop or oil. No more lost drain plugs, no more crush washers. No more oil spilling on the driveway. With the up top oil filter on my car and the Fumoto Valve oil changes are super simple and clean. takes less than 10 minutes in my driveway. I spend more time dragging out the car ramps.If you service your own vehicle or would like to make it easier, get one of these.

I purchased this Fumoto valve -sourced from Industrial Tech Supply – from Amazon. Then I ordered an imitation from eBay. A casual inspection shows the difference between a genuine Fumoto drain valve as compared to a cheap Chinese knock off. The Fumoto brand has a smooth casting with the name “Fumoto” and “Made in Japan” stamped on it. The copy cat has no identifying marks and the casting has a rough finish.The Fumoto valve operation is stiff, the copycat has a loose operation – suggesting a potential for leaks.The installation of the Fumoto brand valve was pretty easy.However, after two days I found a small oil puddle under the engine. I inspected the valve and could not see the source, so I cleaned up the valve and the oil pan, then took the car for a drive. When I got back, I again inspected the valve. At first glance it looked clean, but then I used a clean paper towel to track the source of the leak. The side of the valve has an assembly port, closed off with a circular plate and an e-ring. I placed the paper towel in the port and found a drip of oil. I waited 5 minutes and used a fresh paper towel, and found another drop of oil.Based upon this analysis, I figured the slow leak would take a while to lose enough oil to present a problem.But that is not good enough for my car, especially since my wife is the primary driver, and she would never think to keep an eye on the oil level.I returned the Fumoto valve.Update: I am thinking the Fumoto valve itself was not leaking, but the fiber gasket included with the valve was the source of the leak. Use a Subaru crush washer instead.Update: I installed the Chinese knock-off using a Subaru crush washer instead of the supplied washer. The valve leaked two drops of oil then stopped. After 500 miles, no more leaks. I credit the crush washer for drip free service.
